Featured Best Selling Battle Axes
Best Selling Inventory Of Medieval Battle Axes For Collector’s Displays
While the sword may be king, the battle axe did all the dirty work; here at Valiant Swords we offer all sorts of blades, including a selection of Medieval battle axes and sundry other hatchets on our Battle Axes page.
Like many of the most formidable weapons, the battle axe grew out of humble, utilitarian beginnings. First used as a tool to chop kindling and dice meat, the axe soon turned its sharp hand to war, though it retained its more mundane functions when soldiers set up camp or hunkered down for a long siege. While they might look clunky, battle axes were typically quite light, allowing the wielder to wield it quickly and strike repeated blows. The blade was thinner than a typical wood axe, forged for slicing soft flesh rather than chopping thick branches.
While it was used by myriad civilizations, the battle axe is most popularly associated with a lumbering, bearded Viking giant. This may be for good reason: Viking marauders and mercenaries perfected the art of wielding and forging the battle axe, producing throwing axes and the famous bearded axe design. One reason the battle axe was so ubiquitous among Scandinavian warriors is simple—they were cheaper than swords. Easily available to poor farmers and skilled soldiers alike, the battle axe was the most common weapon among Viking infantrymen. Among men of taste and wealth, axes were often embellished or engraved with intricate patterns, inlaid with silver.
